FIRST HALF

After taking care of St. Cloud Apollo on their home field, the ROCORI Spartans traveled to Fergus Falls for their second game of the 2008 playoffs. The Spartans and the Otters squared off earlier this season with the Otters just edging the Spartans 28-26. However, had the Spartans been able to protect the football in their previous match, they might have been able to come out on top. In the first quarter, both defenses played strong limiting both opposing offenses to only a handful of first downs. Ultimately, the Otters were able to get on the board first, capitalizing on excellent field position.


SECOND HALF

The Spartans trailed going into the second half by three touchdowns, but they looked to get Nick Schneider more involved in the offense. Their first of the half was filled with impressive runs and efficient pass plays. However, the drive would stall on the six yard-line, and the Spartans would turn the ball over on downs. Unable to get the offense going until a late Mitch Bork touchdown reception, the Spartans fell to the Otters and their season ended in Fergus Falls. The team made a great push into the playoffs this season, and their strong efforts did not go unnoticed in the community. Coach Baumgarten and his staff pulled together a great group of young men and not only taught them how to play the game of football, but the staff also taught them how to be respectful individuals within the community. For that, ROCORI is proud.

Fresh off of two Central Lakes Conference victories, the ROCORI Spartans looked to win a third straight game against the Apollo Eagles. Earlier in the year, the Spartans beat the Eagles on opening night. However, in the first meeting, the Eagles were without two of their best two-way players. In this playoff battle the Spartans fell behind early, but they stuck to the game plan of running the football.


SECOND HALF

In the second half both teams would bounce back and forth with the football moving from end zone to end zone.  Enjoy the action as ROCORI and Apollo battle for the right to continue in the playoff season.  The final score ended with the Spartans on top 38 to 30 and winning the right to play #1 seed, Fergus Falls.

In their final regular season game of the 2008 season, the ROCORI Spartans hosted the Bemidji Lumberjacks. Fresh off of a gritty comeback win against Willmar, the Spartans looked to get on a roll as they headed into the playoffs. Nick Schneider and the offense would supply plenty of points, and they would also control the clock as the team pounded the ball on the ground, cruising to an easy victory. The Spartans opened up the second half leading by two touchdowns, and they would continue to run the ball efficiently. They would score on their first drive of the second half. The defense would also play strong as Alex Salstrand came up with his second fumble recovery of the game. ROCORI played an excellent all around team game, and the Spartans went on to win 41-21.

In desperate need of a Central Lakes Conference win, the ROCORI Spartans traveled to Willmar to take on the Cardinals. Early in the game Willmar jumped out to a 14 – 0 lead and it looked as if the Spartans were going to lose again. However, the offense put together an impressive drive that utilized both the running and ground attack. If the Spartans wish to have any success moving forward into the playoffs, they’ll need to continue to pound the ball on the ground, which will eventually open up the passing game. After winning their first two Central Lakes Conference games, the ROCORI Spartans football team have been in a bit of a funk. Things would not be any easier for the Spartans last Friday as they welcomed the St. Cloud Tech Tigers to Cold Spring for their homecoming football game. The weather was perfect, and the crowd was rowdy as they hoped to cheer the Spartans on to a victory. The Tigers marched down the field for a touchdown on their first possession, and the Spartans countered with a touchdown of their own after a nice kickoff return by senior Mitch Bork. The Spartans came out to the field up by a field goal, but their lead disappeared quickly. After a fumble at midfield, the Tigers high-powered offense quickly put up two scores and snatched the lead away. St Cloud Tech would not trail again as the Spartans came up on the wrong side of victory for the fourth game in a row.

Last Friday night the ROCORI Spartans took on the Fergus Falls Otters. The Otters came into Cold Spring undefeated with impressive CLC victories against Willmar and Sartell. The first quarter was packed with action as both teams put up a combined 35 points. This story features all of the first half highlights from the game.

After a long first half filled with scoring, the temperature began to drop and the fog rolled into Spartan Stadium. At times the players had trouble seeing the ball let alone gripping it in their hands. Down by just one score, the Spartans leaned on their defense to stop the Otters playmakers. Watch the second half of the game as the Spartans fought to pull out a win against a great undefeated opponent.

The Rocori Spartans varsity football team returned home this week to take on the undefeated Fergus Falls Otters.  In this game highlight Quarterback Adam Backes fakes a half-back pitch and then finds wide receiver Dustin Schlangen on a long pass down the middle.  Schlangen breaks two tackles and lopes on into the end zone for a 65 yard touchdown.  This ended up being a back and forth dog fight between two well coached teams. ROCORI Varsity Football vs Sauk Rapids-Rice GAME HIGHLIGHTS

FIRST HALF

The ROCORI Spartans took their unbeaten record on the road last Friday as they looked to win a third straight CLC match up. It would not be easy for the Spartans as the Sauk Rapids Storm have a solid ground attack and a defiantly stout defense. The first quarter was dominated by defensive play with a late field goal miss keeping the score tied at 0-0. Each team scored a touchdown in the second quarter. The Storm took just two plays to get into the end zone on a long run. The Spartans methodically controlled the clock during their eventual journey across the goal line.


SECOND HALF

The second half was all the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm as they controlled the clock for over seven of ten minutes in the third quarter. They would score two quick touchdowns and put the game out of reach as the Spartan offense was not able to get anything going. Hats off to the Storm as they have a great ball club. It’s likely that if the Spartans are going to make it through the playoffs, they’ll have to go through by way of the Storm.  Watch for more highlights this coming weekend and be sure to get on out and support the Spartans as they return home this Friday in a game against Fergus Falls.

After Traveling to Little Falls last week, the Spartans took their unbeaten record across the Mississippi river to take on CLC rival, the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm. The first half was evenly matched, as each team scored a touchdown. On this play you’ll see a touchdown pass down the far sideline from Adam Backes to Mitch Bork.
