Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a hospice worker, mortician or a... cemetery monument builder? How would you feel if you had to deal with death on a daily basis?
Death, grieving widows, funerals, and cemeteries were all a part of growing up for me. I was born the youngest son of a monument builder. My father, a monument company owner and salesman, made his living by meeting, advising, designing, and manufacturing cemetery monuments (more commonly referred to as tombstones). Every week, he would hit the road calling on grieving widows and widowers throughout Minnesota. As I grew older, my dad would even take me along on sales calls, using me as an ice breaker and a deal closer with clients. I remember as a self-righteous young teenager thinking that my father's profession was not very respectable. I had a hard time accepting the reality that he was making a living off of the tragedy and death of others.
