An Old Fashioned Wedding?
GNTC’s summer musical Annie Get Your Gun features the familiar music and clever lyrics of Irving Berlin. One of our favorites is “An Old Fashioned Wedding” where Frank Butler sings about the kind of wedding him and Annie Oakley will have. “We’ll have an old fashioned wedding; blessed in the good old fashioned way. I’ll vow to love you forever; you’ll vow to love and honor and obey. Somewhere in some little chapel…a simple wedding for an old fashioned bride and groom.” Annie, however, has other ideas. “I wanna weddin’ in a big church with bridesmaids and flower girls. Alotta ushers in tailcoats, reporters and photographers. A ceremony with a bishop who will tie the knot and say, ‘do you agree to love and honor’ yes, but not obey. A big reception at the Waldorf (Astoria hotel in New York) with champagne and caviar – if it’s not a big wedding then I don’t wanna get married at all.” The best part comes when they each sing about the wedding they want as a duet. With such different ideas about their wedding, will they ever walk off together into the sunset? You’ll have to come see for yourself.
