ROCORI Trail Update 2008

The ROCORI Trail Project recently received another big boost a couple by the Minnesota Legislature and Governor Tim Pawlenty.  The bonding bill pass by the legislature and signed by the Governor included $372 thousand for the ROCORI trail project. This is in addition to the federal grant of $526 thousand received a couple years ago. The project will expand the trail from Richmond through Cold Spring to Rockville, connecting with the Glacial Lakes Trail, the Beaver Island Trail, and the Lake Wobegon Trail. Once completed the total ROCORI trail length will be 12.2 miles.

This story includes a recent ROCORI Trail committee meeting where the steps to making the trail a reality by 2010 were further delineated.  Phase one of the project will create a paved trail along the present railroad bed beginning at the Sauk River bridge in Richmond and ending in downtown Cold Spring.  Six blocks of the trail was constructed in downtown Rockville during the summer of 2007 as a part of the highway 23 turn back project.

Gerald “Jerry” P. Sand (Obituary)

Age 62

Richmond

April 2, 1946 – April 28, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, MN for Gerald “Jerry” P. Sand, age 62, who died Monday at the Paynesville Area Hospital.  Inurnment will be at a later date.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday (TODAY) and from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond.  Parish prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. followed by a rosary lead by Diann’s sister, Alice and sister-in-law, Julia and the Catholic Aid Association.  The Richmond American Legion will have a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. followed by a “celebration of Jerry’s life” ceremony afterwards.

5th Graders Use Technology To Get Immediate Feedback.

In this story the parents of the fifth grade students at Cold Spring elementary are given a presentation on the latest technological gadget to enhance student learning and student-teacher communication. This gadget involves a classroom set of cell phone like devices that each student uses to respond to questions displayed on a electronic blackboard.  The system allows the teacher to get instant feedback from all of his or her students in the classroom with the simple click of the button.

SCAM WARNING! : Cold Spring Door To Door Sales

    Good afternoon,

Unfortunately my reason for contacting you today is not as positive as usual. All day we've been dealing with an apparently unscrupulous vendor. They have been going door-to-door selling merchandise. I won't go into a lot of detail, but only say that if you are approached by a vendor at your door, please think carefully and act cautiously.

I've attached a copy of the license that was issued to them, which has now since been revoked. We have other detailed information on these individuals, which I am not able to share publicly.

I ask three things of you.
1. Please contact City Hall if you have purchased merchandise. We will do our best to give you instructions on how to get yourself out of the situation as best as possible.
2. If you are approached by a vendor at the door that appears to be part of this company, please be sure to contact City Hall.
3. Please be sure to pass this word along...particularly to your elderly or vulnerable friends and neighbors.

Just last night the City dramatically stepped up its ability to better manage these vendors and better react when problems occur. In the next edition of the newsletter we will feature a detailed explanation of what all residents can do to protect themselves, and we will tell you how can empower yourselves. In the meantime, I will share with you how to protect yourselves.

Firstly, I would demand that the salesperson show me a valid, current solicitors license issued by the City. If they can not, I would demand that they leave my property. If they produce a license, but I am suspicious, I would call City Hall immediately to verify that the license is valid. If I decide to purchase from that salesperson and encounter any sort of problem, I would immediately report the matter to City Hall.

The ROCORI High School spring sports season is underway and the Spartan varsity baseball team is 2-0. They looked to improve their mark to 3-0 against the Little Falls Flyers on Tuesday April 22. ROCORI CITY UPDATE 4.23.2008

This story is the second in a series of community updates that will be provided by each of the three city halls in the “Land of ROCORI.” In this story the mayor of Rockville Brian Herberg gives us an update about what’s going on in Rockville. On this Saturday, there is a fundraiser at the Granite Edge Café from 4p.m. to 7p.m. Mayor Herberg also updates us about a bill that is currently in legislature. Lastly, there is a meeting being held on April 30, to discuss the Rockville detachment issue and for updates on that evolving story, stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI.

Cold Spring City Administrator Larry Lahr informs us about action the city takes involving nuisance violations. It is important for Cold Spring citizens to take care of any non-functional automobiles, old appliances, debris, or any other items that aren’t supposed to be out in their lawn. If you have any questions about your lawn or another lawn in your area, please feel free to call Larry Lahr at the city hall.

Lastly, Dan Coughlin updates ROCORI citizens about the Richmond cleanup. He details what can and can’t be brought to the cleanup, which takes place this Saturday. Also, he reminds us of the work that is being put in to replace one of the wells at the water treatment center. If there are any issues that arise from the work being done at the well, Dan, or another member for Richmond city hall will be updating you on DigElog ROCORI.
