Halloween is here and DigElog ROCORI is proud to bring you this exclusive story. This week we had a chance to take a tour of Scareview Gardens 2 in Sauk Rapids. Scareview Gardens is a haunted house-fundraiser that donates all of their proceeds to local charities. This story features an interview with the founder and coordinator of Scareview Gardens, Chanda Gebhardt. It also features an inside look at some of the spooky sights the haunted house has to offer.

2007 Outstanding Community Award

On Friday, October 26th, 2007, the 20/20 Vision Team of Cold Spring was recognized by the Initiative Foundation as the 2007 Outstanding Community. 

The year 2003 was coming to a close and Cold Spring had been selected to host a community planning process by both the Minnesota Design Team and the Healthy Communities Partnership, a part of the Initiative Foundation. A core group of 10 Cold Spring area residents acted as a steering committee to get the program moving.  They called themselves the 20/20 Vision Team.

The community visioning process of 2004 prompted the creation of six 20/20 Action Teams. These included Arts & Culture, Design Standards, Land Use, Natural Resources, Tourism & Commerce and Social Action. These groups each established goals and action plans based on the priorities created during the visioning process.

Some of the accomplishments of the 20/20 Action Teams include: the establishment of a 30 member community band, new zoning and building design ordinances, the ROCORI Trail project, rain gardens in the new Lions Park, a local Faith In Action program, and an enhanced Chain of Lakes magazine that included stories about our historical and cultural past. Even the new Farmer's Market that will launch in June of 2006, had its beginnings in the 20/20 Visioning process.

Duane Kuss, past 20/20 co-chair, joins the Cold Spring 20/20 Steering Committee on stage to accept the 2007 Outstanding Community Award.  The awards banquet was held at Madden's Resort in Brainerd.  Also present to receive the award were Kay Cook, Rita Hennen, Nadine Schnettler, Betty Johnson, Dave Olson, Larry Lahr, and Ken Wendinger.

The ROCORI Spartans looked to bounce back from a tough loss last week and win a road playoff game against the Fergus Falls Otters. Coach Theisen emphasized team pride in his pre-game speech because that’s exactly what it would take to beat the number three seeded Otters. Watch this story and see all the first half highlights of this tough sectional battle.

The ROCORI Spartans jumped out to an early lead, but turnovers would give the Otters a chance to get back in the game.  In order to steal a victory on the road, the Spartans would have to overcome the adversity and play with pride. Watch the second half highlights as the Spartans were able to take care of business and advance to play at Detroit Lakes this Saturday at 7 p.m.

This story is a follow up story and is the second portion of DigElog’s coverage of fire prevention week. In this story we feature members of the Richmond Fire Department illustrating the importance of fire safety to young children. A special thanks goes out to all of the volunteers at Richmond Fire Department for their services in promoting fire safety and also for all of the work they do to keep the community safe.

ROCORI Girls Tennis Section Tournament

    It was the farthest any tennis team from ROCORI has ever made it. The girls from ROCORI would take on CLC powerhouse Brainerd and would give the Warriors all they could handle. The match was very close but the Spartans couldn't hold on as they would fall 4-3. After that it was the individual tournament and Alyse Grelson and Linsdey Schmitt were the only doubles team to make it this far for ROCORI. They would lose a three set marathon to the girls from Fergus Falls. Anna Taft was the only singles player for the Spartans and she would lose to a girl from Brainerd. It was a great season for the tennis team and the future continues to be bright.

Last week was fire prevention week and the Cold Spring Fire department was out in the community educating kids and parents about the importance of  “exit plans” and also other fire safety precautions. Members from the all-volunteer department drove out into Cold Spring in the fire trucks while handing out candy, pencils, and other goodies. This story features footage from the evening’s activities as well as an interview with Cold Spring Fire Chief, Jim Maile.
