Tom “The Kraut” Rau Obituary

age 74

Cold Spring

February 1, 1933 – September 29, 2007

Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at The Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring, MN for Tom “The Kraut” Rau, age 74, who died Saturday at St. Cloud V.A. Medical Center.  Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may gather one hour prior to services at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. 

Tom was born in St. Cloud, MN to Norbert and Alma (Rieder) Rau.  He was previously married and is survived by his daughter Debbie.  Tom later married Shirley Hippler in September of 1980.  He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.  Most recently he loved working at the Rich-Spring Golf Club.  Tom was an avid bowler, he loved golfing, fishing and hunting.  He was a member of the Cold Spring American Legion and VFW, and former a member of the Elks.

Survivors include his wife Shirley; daughter Debbie Rau (Alan Wenger); step-children, Lee (Dennis) Kurtz, Nick (Betsy) Picciano; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jim.

ROCORI Cross Country

It is often said that hockey players are the toughest athletes in all of sports, but don’t tell that to the ROCORI cross-country team. Last week the boys and girls battled the elements in what was supposed to be their only home meet of the year. However, the meet was canceled to do tornadoes and large thunderstorms in the area. Even though the meet was canceled the team practiced, and this story features footage of the ROCORI cross-country team running on their home track at the golf course.

Last week the XPrize Foundation and Google announced a new world-wide challenge to encourage man's return to Moon exploration or what is now referred to as Moon 2.0.  Private companies from around the world will compete to land a privately funded robotic rover on the Moon that is capable of roaming the lunar surface for at least 500 meters and sending video, images and data back to the Earth.  The first two successful companies to achieve this challenge will receive an Xprize of 30 million dollars.

In this story we use the Lunar XPrize challenge as the back-drop to discussing some of the local challenges the ROCORI school district is faced with in our Science program.  Ironically, in one view we see the opportunity for our children to aspire to being a part of a team that will be the next explorers on the Moon and then in another view we take a visit to the ROCORI Middle School where a teacher is hauling 5 gallon buckets of water around in order for the students to perform their science experiments.  I think you'll agree... something isn't quite right here...?

Loretta (Thielen) Zastrow Obituary

age 94

Cold Spring

January 6, 1913 – September 27, 2007

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Loretta (Thielen) Zastrow, age 94, who died Thursday at the Assumption Nursing Home.  Burial will be in the Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Cemetery, Richmond.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Sunday and from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.  The Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Aid Association, Christian Women and St. Julian Mission Group will pray a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Parish Prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening.

North Pointe Park Opens

On Saturday September 22, members from the Cold Spring community helped celebrate the grand opening of the North Pointe Park. As you see on the map, the park is located just northwest of ROCORI High School.

From the high school, take Stearns County Road 50 heading north

Take the first right onto 158th Avenue

Take the first right onto 241st Street

Take the first left onto 4th Ave N

Take the second right onto 12th St N

The park is at the end of the block on the left-hand side.

The event was a smashing success as volunteers helped serve root beer floats to those that came out.

ROCORI Spartans Varsity Football vs Little Falls

As we saw in the preview, the Spartans had a coming out party against the Little Falls Flyers. The Spartans were looking for their first win, and the game was close through the first quarter. However, the offense was hungry and the running game would eventually get on track. Watch this story and see all of the highlights from the first half.

The Spartans jumped out to the lead in the first half and the second would be no different. The coaching staff challenged the defense at halftime and they stepped up big in the second half. Watch and see the Spartans finish out their first win and also check out some of the backups coming in and producing at a high level. Stay tuned next week as the Spartans travel to rival Sartell.

DigElogROCORI is celebrating its second anniversary this month.  To commemorate the beginning of our 3rd year, we encouraged our viewers to send us an email message that included, "Happy Birthday DigElogROCORI" in the subject line.  Sandi Hilsgen was one of a large group of DigElogROCORI viewers who sent in her email congratulations.  She was chosen by random as the grand prize winner of $100.00. 

Sandi is a "Land Of ROCORI" teacher who in this story shares just a tiny bit of her 25 years of teaching with us.  She is one of those special people that helps to give our young children their right start in life. I'll bet if you think back far enough, you'll remember a Sandi Hilsgen who was a special teacher in your life.

It was a "coming out" party for the ROCORI Spartans this past Friday evening when they welcomed the Little Falls Flyers to their home field.  In this clip you'll see a short pass from quarterback Adam Meyer to wide receiver Luke Vossen who then takes off down the sideline for a first quarter touchdown.  Even ROCORI kicker Jake Hemmesch has a great night putting it through the goalposts for the point after.

The ROCORI Defense also had a banner night last Friday against the Flyers.  This video clip is just one of many examples where the Spartans held strong allowing Little Falls to score only once during the entire game.  Zack Bork has a great night for ROCORI and here sacks the Flyers quarterback for a big loss.
