Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Lawrence Gertken, age 82, who died Thursday morning at the Assumption Nursing Home. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Parish Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Friday (TODAY) and from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond. Parish prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. followed by a rosary with the Knights of Columbus and the Roscoe Women’s Mission Group.
Lawrence was born in Richmond, MN to John and Katherine (Athmann) Gertken. He married Isabel Wessels on May 30, 1951 in St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Farming, MN. Isabel died in 2003. Lawrence married Alicia (Steffens) Kohnen on February 7, 2004 in Mesa, AZ. He farmed near Cold Spring and owned and operated Gertken Marl Service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Lawrence had a ‘gift of gab’ and will be missed by those who knew him. He was a member of St. Boniface Parish and Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife Alicia; children, John (Mary) of Cold Spring, Ann (Mike) Scherer of St. Joseph, Duane (Shirley) of Richmond, Steve (Judy) of Cold Spring, Shirley (John) Zieglmeier of Cold Spring, Tim (Anne) of Cold Spring, Michael (Linda) of Cold Spring, June (Al) Ricke of Richmond, Lenny of Madison, WI, and Larry, Jr. (Brenda) of Richmond; step-children, Mary Ellen Bechtold, Debra Novacek, Robert Kohnen, Terri Fleischhacker, Donald Kohnen, and Karen Fleischhacker; sisters-in-law, Mary Gertken, Thecla Gertken, Martha Gertken and Bernelda Gertken; 26 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 26 step-grandchildren; 25 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabel; parents; siblings, Mary Ludwig, Henry Gertken, Norbert Gertken, Veronica Brinkman, Wendelin Gertken, Cyril Gertken, Benedict Gertken, Alice Moonen, Sylvester Gertken, and Clarence “Sonny” Gertken; grandson, Jesse Gertken; stepson, James Kohnen.
