Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Rockville, MN for John J. Seelen age 81, who died Friday at the Golden Living Center – Otter Tail Lake in Battle Lake, Minnesota. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. on Monday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring and from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Church in Rockville. Parish Prayers will be at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Knights of Columbus Rosary Monday evening at the funeral home.
John was born in Little Falls, Minnesota to John and Alice (Assmussen) Seelen. While he was a teenager he was under the foster care of Richard and Martha Janski and Eddie and Hilda Buemer. John served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1953 in Boelingen, West Germany where he married Inge H. Lausmann in July of 1953. John owned and operated Big John’s Excavating in Rockville and together with Inge they operated the Vienna Haus Restaurant in Rockville during the 1960’s. In 1974 they purchased the Rockville General Store which later became IHS Antiques. John enjoyed delivering the Shopping News for over 20 years. He was a member of Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife Inge, children, Rita (Ken ) Seelen-Hora, Chuck (Peg), Renate (Bill) Schaefer, and Greg (Tami); grandchildren, Erica Hemmesch, Joe Hemmesch, Priya Hora, and Jon, Emily, and Chris Seelen; one great-grandson Nolan Hemmesch; siblings, Phyllis Hoskins, Nels Olson, Reverend Harley Holden, Patricia Bandimere, Joyce Singleton, Shirley Stutzman, Marilyn Edwards, Beverly Setterstrom and Shirley Dietrich.
Preceded in death by his son John E. Seelen (1983), and siblings Jim Seelen, Delda Poland, and Bill Olson.
