Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Rockville, MN for Gilbert “Gil” Buchheit, age 71, who lost his courageous 16 year battle with cancer on Sunday at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday (TODAY) and from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Parish prayers will be at 8:00 p.m.
Gil was born in Festina, IA to Hubert and Irma (Moellers) Buchheit. He married Catherine Massmann on April 29, 1961 in Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, Rockville, MN. Gil graduated in 1955 from Calmer High School, Calmer, Iowa. He enlisted in the United States Army from 1956-1958 and spent 18 months in Guam. Gil worked at the Sartell Paper Mill for 32 years and was a member of the United Paper Workers International Union Local 274 and held Trustee and Stewart positions. He retired in 1999. Gil enjoyed the MN State Fair where he was on the ‘Mounted Patrol’ for 11 years. Gil and Cathy looked forward to spending winters in Donna, TX. He enjoyed hobby farming but his real joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and his horses. Gil was a member of Mary of Immaculate Conception Parish, Rockville Lions, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 2008. He was an active member of the Rocky Riders Saddle Club of Cold Spring and the Winneshiek Saddle Club of Decorah Iowa, 4H Leader, lecturer, usher and board member for Project Astride.
Survivors include his loving wife, Cathy; daughter, Kelly (Dan) Willard of St. Cloud and son, Troy (Janis) Buchheit of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Clay and Mitch Willard, Lindsey and Cody Buchheit; sister, Rosa Kay Jensen of Rochester and many in-laws; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cathy (1970); parents; 2 brothers-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law.
