Gilbert “Gil” Buchheit

Age 71

Rockville

May 3, 1937 – June 22, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Rockville, MN for Gilbert “Gil” Buchheit, age 71, who lost his courageous 16 year battle with cancer on Sunday at his home surrounded by his family and friends.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday (TODAY) and from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.  Parish prayers will be at  8:00 p.m.

Gil was born in Festina, IA to Hubert and Irma (Moellers) Buchheit. He married Catherine Massmann on April 29, 1961 in Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, Rockville, MN.  Gil graduated in 1955 from Calmer High School, Calmer, Iowa.  He enlisted in the United States Army from 1956-1958 and spent 18 months in Guam.   Gil worked at the Sartell Paper Mill for 32 years and was a member of the United Paper Workers International Union Local 274 and held Trustee and Stewart positions. He retired in 1999.  Gil enjoyed the MN State Fair where he was on the ‘Mounted Patrol’ for 11 years. Gil and Cathy looked forward to spending winters in Donna, TX.  He enjoyed hobby farming but his real joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and his horses.  Gil was a member of Mary of Immaculate Conception Parish, Rockville Lions, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in 2008.  He was an active member of the Rocky Riders Saddle Club of Cold Spring and the Winneshiek Saddle Club of Decorah Iowa, 4H Leader, lecturer, usher and board member for Project Astride. 

Survivors include his loving wife, Cathy; daughter, Kelly (Dan) Willard of St. Cloud and son, Troy (Janis) Buchheit of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Clay and Mitch Willard, Lindsey and Cody Buchheit; sister, Rosa Kay Jensen of Rochester and many in-laws; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cathy (1970); parents; 2 brothers-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law.

Joseph “Joey” Lieser

Age 65

St. Martin

March 10, 1943 – June 22, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2008 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, MN for Joseph “Joey” Lieser, age 65, who died Sunday at the Paynesville Area Hospital.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Martin Parish Hall in St. Martin.  Parish prayers will be at 8:00 p.m.  Arrangements were entrusted with the Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond.

Joey was born in Paynesville, MN to Berthold and Arcella (Lenz) Lieser. He married Norine Imdieke on September 4, 1965 in St. John’s Catholic Church, Meire Grove, MN.  Joey loved and cherished his family and will be most remembered for his ability to joke, tease and have a good time!  Joey and Norine farmed together on the family farm west of St. Martin.   He enjoyed playing cards especially “Schafskopf”, deer hunting, baseball and softball.   Joey was a member of St. Martin Parish, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Catholic Aid Association and Paynesville Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his loving wife, Norine; children, Cheryl (Steve) Schlangen, Karla Lauer, Tina (Joseph) Burbach and Keith Lieser; grandchildren, Ryan and Zach Lauer, Krista (fiancé, Andy Peach), Jenna, Matthew and Michael Schlangen, Charles and John “Jack” Burbach; siblings, Vicky (Alvin “Bub”) Hartman, Marion (Stanley) Olmscheid, Elvin “Smiley” (Elnora) Lieser, Ann (Leroy) Patrick, Verna (Norb) Kalthoff, S. Jean Lieser, O.S.F., Dorothy Welle, Irene (Duane) Bertram, Ralph (Sylvia) Lieser, Wilfred “Willie” (Deanna) Lieser; sister-in-law, Pat Carstens.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald; brother-in-law, Junior Welle.

Alice Blum

Age 88

Cold Spring

February 18, 1920 – June 16, 2008

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring, MN for Alice Blum, age 88, who died at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring.  Burial will be in the St. James Parish Cemetery, Jacobs Prairie.

A gathering of friends will be one hour prior to the service in the Wenner Funeral Home on Thursday morning.

Alice was born in Belgrade, MN to John and Helen Strodtman. She married August Blum on October 1, 1938 in Belgrade, MN.  Alice was a miracle baby; being born at 2 pounds in the 1920’s was very uncommon.  She was a survivor.  Alice shared her love of life with her family and friends any chance she could.  She volunteered many hours of her time in the Cold Spring area, especially at the Assumption Nursing Home.  Alice enjoyed quilting, baking and playing bingo.  She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and many other area organizations.

Survivors include her children and their families, James (Barbara) of Houston, TX along with their son, Roman (Silvia) and children- Yasmina and Zoie, their daughter, Myriah (Mike) Davis; daughter-in-law, Ruth (+David) of Deerwood and her son, Samuel (Brandy) and children, Noah and Neven, and daughter, Katy (Nic) Hentges and Hannah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, August; son, David and her siblings.

Memorials preferred to Assumption Nursing Home-715 1st. Street North, Cold Spring.

Benedict J. Schlangen

Age 84

Richmond

January 29, 1924 – June 14, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, MN for Benedict Schlangen, age 84, who died Saturday at the Paynesville Area Hospital.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond.  Parish prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. followed by a rosary with the St. Joseph and St. Catherine Catholic Aid Association and the Richmond Knights of Columbus.

Benedict was born in Richmond, MN to Jacob and Catherine (Braegelmann) Schlangen.  He married Amanda Stang on September 8, 1948 in St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin.  Benedict and Amanda farmed together northwest of Richmond.  He enjoyed playing cards; especially Solo and Schafskopf, he loved driving tractor, watching his garden grow and the Minnesota Twins.  He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, St. Joseph and St. Catherine Catholic Aid Association and the Richmond Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife Amanda, children, Joey (Barney) Kiffmeyer of Luxemburg, Ron (Cindy) of Eden Prairie, Rich (Dorothy) of Marty, Roger (Nancy) of Richmond, Mary (Ron) Gillitzer of Stoutsville, MO, Chickie (Maynard) Meyer of St. Joseph, Mel (Doris) of St. Martin, Alvin (Alice) of Freeport, Fred (Phyllis) of Albany, Steve (Cheryl) of Albany, Ruth (Carl) Lieser of St. Martin, and Ralph (Missy) of St. Cloud; 49 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, S. Wilma Schlangen O.S.B., Cecelia (Ray) Silvers, and S. Lucille Schramel O.S.B.

He was preceded in death by his son Benedict, granddaughter Lucille, great-grandson Henry; brothers, Paul J., and Ray; sisters Ludwina Kemper, Theresa Theis, S. Cyrilla Schlangen O.S.B., and S. Florentine Schlangen O.S.B.

Leander “Lee” Ludwig

Age 87

Cold Spring

September 4, 1920 – June 5, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2008 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Leander “Lee” Ludwig, age 87, who died Thursday at his home.  Entombment will be in the parish cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Sunday and from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.  Parish prayers will be at 6:00 p.m., at 8:00 p.m. the Cold Spring American Legion and VFW will have a prayers service followed by a rosary with the St. Nicholas Men’s Society and the Catholic Aid Association.

Lee was born in Eden Valley, MN to John and Gertrude (Nistler) Ludwig. He married Rita Schreifels on March 4, 1946 in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Cold Spring. Lee served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater from 1942-1945.  He farmed in the St. Nicholas area all his life.  Lee loved spending time with his family, playing cards, fishing and taking trips to Duluth to watch the ships.  He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, St. Nicholas Men’s Society, Catholic Aid Association and a life member of Cold Spring American Legion and VFW.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Rita; children, John (Sandra) of Waite Park, Sharon (Tom) Steil of St. Joseph, Paul (Trish) of St. Nicholas, Judy (Terry) Czech of Cold Spring and Bob (Julie) of Waconia; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law and 1 sister-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Joseph Ludwig; sisters, Eleanor Ruprecht, Isabelle Steman, Millie Otterness, Adeline “Pat” Kielty and brother, Herb Ludwig.
