Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2007 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in St. Nicholas, MN for Amanda Ann Stommes, age 79, who died Monday at her home surrounded by her loving family after a 2 year battle with cancer. Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Parish Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church in St. Nicholas. The Christian Women, St. Veronicaís Mission Group from St. Nicholas, St. Boniface Mission Group and Catholic Aid Association will pray at 4:30 p.m. and Parish Prayers will be at 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Amanda was born in Richmond, MN to John and Veronica (Klehr) Gertken. She married Ervin Stommes on May 17, 1949 in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Richmond, MN.
The couple farmed near St. Nicholas, MN for 34 years. Amanda was a homemaker and she cooked for many weddings. In 1983 the couple retired from farming and moved to Cold Spring. She worked for the Cold Spring bakery for 17 years. In her spare time Amanda enjoyed quilting, playing cards, cooking, gardening and reading. Her family and friends were the light of her life. She is a member of St. Nicholas Parish, Christian Women, St. Veronicaís Mission Group, St. Boniface Mission Group and the Catholic Aid Association.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Ervin; children, Shirley (Mike) Kuechle of Watkins, Ron of Fridley, Allen (Sue) of Richmond, Donna (Elmer) Skaj of Rice, Roger (Karen) of Cold Spring, Mary (Dave) Schwartz of Cold Spring, Deb (Steve) Meyer of Annandale and Bonnie (Kurt) Hemmesch of Cold Spring; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jerry (Theresa) Gertken, Leroy Gertken and sister-in-law, Thar Gertken all of Richmond, Grace (Omar) Fischbach of Cold Spring, Leora (Eugene) Stommes of St. Cloud and Joan (Jim) Hennen of Cold Spring.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister, Melvin and Rosalia Braegelmann and infant brothers, Donald and Vernald.
