Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, MN for Clara (Kascht) Backes, age 95, who died Friday at the Assumption Nursing home.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Monday and from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond (151 Oakwood Ave. S.E.).  Parish prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. followed by a rosary with the Golden Smiles, Catholic Aid Association and Christian Women at 4:30 p.m.

Clara was born in Richmond, MN to Bernard and Elizabeth (Weeres) Vogt. She married Norbert Kascht on September 11, 1935.  They farmed together north of Richmond until they retired in 1966.  Norbert died July 6, 1972.  Clara married Ambrose Backes on October 9, 1981, he died on September 21, 1995.  She later worked as a cook at Richmond Elementary and Jerryís Supper Club.  Clara was a wonderful mother and she loved to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, working outside, quilting and playing cards.   She is a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, Christian Women, Catholic Aid Association and Golden Smiles.

Survivors include her children, Theresa (Jerry) Gertken of Richmond, John (Mary) Kascht of Madera, CA, Dick (Gladys) Kascht of Andover, Vic (Melda) Kascht of Shoreview; step-children, Carol (Leon) Wolf of Cold Spring, Ron (Betty) Backes of Richmond, Dennis (Marilyn) Backes of Maple Grove, Bob (Donna) Backes of Pittsburg, KS, and Mike (Mary) Backes of Danville, CA; sister, Agatha Kascht; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren;1 great-great-grandchild; 17 step-grandchildren and 21 step-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Norbert; husband, Ambrose; sister, Rosie Cole;  brother, Edmund Vogt and two grandsons.
