As always, there are some new players stepping into different roles, but the team feels that the attitude at practice has been positive.

Also, Dane Vocelka and Bryan Lashinski tell us about how the team has been working hard this season and the team chemistry seems to be just right under the new coaching staff. For all of your ROCORI Spartans football coverage in 2008, stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI.

2008 Player & Parents Letter (7.27.2008)

7-27-08

Dear ROCORI Football Players and Parents,

I am writing to you to introduce myself as the new ROCORI Football Head Coach for 2008.  Although I did not expect to be in this position until just last week, after much thought and consideration, I am honored and excited to be asked to fulfill this extremely demanding job.  Over the past few years the previous coaches have built and prepared a very respectable program that will help provide us with a solid team again this year.  I am truly grateful to Rick Theisen for his tremendous efforts toward the ROCORI Football Program.  He has set a high bar for expectations that we will try to match again this season.  Thanks to Rick and the other coaches for leaving us with a fine nucleus of talented and prepared players.
With this position comes the responsibility to lead the team and program.  I have these simple goals to guide our coaching staff and team.  Hopefully these guidelines will help our team to be successful.

    •    The team will practice being the best people possible
    •    The team will show respect for themselves and others in winning and losing
    •    The team will work hard and always be prepared in mind, spirit, and body
    •    The team will be organized and display 100% effort at all times
    •    The team will make fun and memorable experiences while playing the game of Football

Welcome to our 2008 coaching staff.  This experienced group of leaders will work very hard to help to prepare and guide our young men to be their best.

    •    Joel Baumgarten – Head Coach - Varsity Offense (QB’s & WR’s)
    •    Mark Johnson-Varsity Defensive and Special Teams (DB’s and Specialists)
    •    Pete Warne-Varsity Offense (with Coach J. Baumgarten) and Special Teams (O Line)
    •    Justin Timm-JV Offense (Linebackers and RB’s)
    •    Dean Baumgarten-JV Defense (D & O Line)
    •    Josh Austad-9th Defense
    •    Lance Johnson-9th Offense
    •    Jeff Illies-RMS
    •    Brian Athmann-RMS
    •    Nate Guetter-RMS
    •    Jon Czech-RMS
    •    2 other RMS coaching positions TBD

The season is approaching quickly and there is so much to do.   We are looking for help organizing many different extra events related to the football program.  Please call if you are willing to volunteer your assistance.  Parents’ help is always appreciated.  We are getting prepared and eagerly awaiting the start of training camp on Monday, August 11th.  Enclosed you will find a tentative daily schedule which will cover the entire football season.  Of course, this basic plan could change, but hopefully this calendar will allow your families to plan accordingly.  We are very encouraged by our 2008 schedule which should allow for many exciting games throughout the season.  I will sincerely appreciate your support throughout the 2008 season.

Sincerely,

Joel Baumgarten, RHS Head Football Coach

2008 ROCORI Football Winter Update

Although the start of the 2008 season is 5 months away, there never really seems to be a completely ‘down’ time in football!

The coaching staff recently attended the Glazier Football Clinic on Feb. 22-24 @ the Sheraton Suites in Bloomington, MN  This is a great clinic for all levels of coaching.  Speakers from around the country-high school, college and professional provide a wealth of information.

Speakers on areas such as strength training, speed
development and program organization gives one plenty of opportunity to hear the best and most up to date information.

In addition we attended the Fellowship of Christian Athletes [FCA] luncheon.  Former Rocori great, Ron Backes hosted the event.  Ron is currently employed by FCA as the Director of Coaching Ministry. We have heard Ron speak before and he really does a great job!  After hearing him and Rod Olson speak, we are hoping to get an FCA Chapter started @ Rocori.

This time of year also begins the college ‘recruiting’ season.  College programs begin their work to gather data for the 2009 class.  That means there is a continuous flow of requests to high school coaches regarding players who they feel are ‘recruitable’ athletes.  Coaches want to give their guys the opportunities to play at the next level-- whether that be D-I, II, or III.  On an average, I may receive 2-3 letters from between March and May.  E-mail contact is becoming more and more frequent is this process, as well.  So, I find myself doing a lot of corresponding this time of year!  In addition, Coach Humbert and Warne are working with off-season players in the strength training & conditioning areas and some guys will also do personalized training as well—Ex. Acceleration Minnesota.

Another project is to develop our GRIDIRON club in order to get information about our program to as many alumni as possible.  We want them to be able to feel that they have a connection to ROCORI football and to keep them up to date on what’s happening –such as the Alumni Video/Photo Journal that Duane Kuss is currently developing on our Web site. (ALUMNI)

All-in-all, we continue to work hard at preparing for the 2008 season. Information about our youth camps, linemen camps and other summer opportunities will be out soon.

Sincerely,

PLaying time, Discipline

Rocori_football_logo
Playing time:

  • Our decisions are sometimes subjective
  • Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work
  • Team rules/requirements
  • Every player will have a defined role on the team
  • Everyone has the right to play—some more than others

Discipline:

Please support us if we have to discipline your son.  I feel that discipline is not what you do to someone, but what you do for someone. When a player is disciplined he can be bitter, or he can become better.  I will speak directly to your son about a problem; if the problem persists, then I will contact you, personally.  If the first steps do not work, I will suspend him for part, or all of the next game.
