ROCORI Football Spartans Earn Road Victory Over Fergus Falls Otters

Coming off a tough loss to the Sauk Rapids Storm, ROCORI was faced with the difficult task of traveling to Fergus Falls. Although Fergus Falls graduated many of their key athletes, the long bus ride and hostile crowd is never easy to overcome.

In the first half, both teams moved the ball between the twenties, but were unable to finish off their drives. The ROCORI defense came up with a couple of key stops when they needed to, and the two sides were knotted at zeros at the half.

Slowly but surely the Spartans offense gained momentum in the second half. Derek Lieser led an impressive 94-yard touchdown drive as he made plays with his arm and his legs. He capped off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to put the Spartans up 7-0. Lieser hooked up with Nathan Meyer for a 60-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and ROCORI was able to hang on for the 13-7 victory on the road. In this highlight, ROCORI Senior Quarterback Derek Lieser finds Sophomore Wide Receiver Nate Meyer across the middle. Meyer breaks 3-4 tackles and romps into the endzone for a 60 yard touchdown.

The second half began just like the end of the first... all ROCORI. But you won't believe what happened in the last 10 minutes of the third quarter. 20 unanswered points and reversed the tide of the entire game.

ROCORI Spartans Battle Flyers, Field Conditions

FIRST HALF

On the afternoon of September 11, 2009 a few heavy rain clouds passed through the land of ROCORI. Shortly after they passed the ROCORI Spartans took the field as they prepared to battle the Little Falls Flyers in their home opener. Although most people figured the wet field conditions would definitely favor the Flyers and their running game against an undersized Spartans line, few figured the game could have unfolded the way it did.

During the previous week the highflying Spartans offense passed all over the field against the Apollo Eagles. As they took on the Flyers however, Lieser and the Spartans could not muster any sort of throwing attack as Little Falls controlled the clock with their ground attack. Eventually ROCORI would lose a low-scoring match that saw their offense only produce one touchdown. Stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI next week as the Spartans try to get back on track against an always tough Sauk Rapids squad.

ROCORI Opens Football Season with Impressive Victory

Last Friday ROCORI traveled to St. Cloud Apollo to open up the 2009 football season under new head coach Mike Rowe. The Spartans have gone through three different coaches over the last three seasons, but for the last two, they have relied heavily on Nick Schneider and the running game.

From the opening possession the Spartans new-look spread offense was precise, efficient, and explosive. Starting quarterback Derek Lieser showed poise and great athleticism as he led the Spartans on three scoring drives in the first half. The defense looked shaky at times, especially considering that everybody in the stadium knew where the ball was going on almost every play. Chris Rocheleau led a relatively weak Apollo offense with 42 carries for 187 yards, but for the most part the Spartans had to be pleased with their efforts. Way to go Spartans. Jimmy's Pizza is proud to recognize Derek Lieser as the Spartans Player of the Week. Lieser was incredibly accurate throwing the football in the Spartans win over the Eagles. He went 14-17 for 279 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed the ball 15 times for 70 yards and added a pair of rushing scores.

Tonight the ROCORI Spartans will travel to St. Cloud Apollo to take on the Eagles for their 2009 Central Lakes Conference opener. The new-look Spartans will be lead by senior quarterback Derek Leiser. First year head coach Mike Rowe looks to repeat last years opening performance as the Spartans jumped all over the Eagles. However, things may not be so easy without Nick Schneider. Come on out to St. Cloud Apollo tonight to cheer on the ROCORI Spartans.
