In
this story you will see a full recap of the ROCORI Spartans 2009
football season. The Spartans had an up and down year with some great
road wins and tough home losses. Battling teams that were often much
bigger, they used hard work and determination to outwork their
opponents. For more highlights from the entire season, click on the

The ROCORI Spartans football team went into their playoff matchup
against the Little Falls Flyers with more injuries than you could shake
a stick at. For starters, the team had none of their starting
linebackers from the season opener. Coupled with the broken hand
suffered by senior quarterback Derek Lieser, the Spartans would be in
for a tough game against their gritty opponents, the Little Falls
Flyers.
ROCORI
opened up sluggish on offense as Nate Meyer started at quarterback. Two
sloppy plays later, Lieser came in and threw a strike to the normally
sure-handed Eric Loxtercamp who then dropped the ball. That set the
tone for ROCORI as they simply could not move the ball and were
constantly fighting an uphill battle when it came to field position.
Eventually, the Spartans would put together a scoring drive and take a
7-0 lead in the second quarter. However on the ensuing kickoff, ROCORI
yielded a 60-yard return that would setup a short field for the Flyers.
A few plays later the Flyers tied the score at 7-7. The turning point
in the game may have taken place when ROCORI could not advance the ball
deep in their own territory with under a minute left. Punting with
under 30 seconds left, the Flyers got the ball on the ROCORI 24 yard
line. Two plays later they cashed in another touchdown and led 14-7 at
halftime.
The second half was more of the same for both teams
as the Flyers continued to pound the ball on the ground while ROCORI’s
defense kept them from scoring until a big touchdown run put the game
out of reach. Watch all of the highlights from both halves and be sure

After last weeks thrilling victory against the Willmar Cardinals,
the Spartans had to quickly prepare for the Bemidji Lumberjacks.
Although ROCORI has been impressive on the road this year, they have
not had a bus ride as long as the trip to Bemidji. High school athletes
often come out sluggish in the first half when traveling for three-plus
hours. This game however, was the exception. ROCORI flew out of the
gates grabbing a 13-0 lead while the defense looked mighty impressive
against the run.
For the second week in a row the Spartans came out in the second
half looking like a completely different team. Only this week, they
looked as if they forgot how to play football when the third quarter
started. Fueled by pride and an energized crowd, the Lumberjacks
marched down the field for three touchdowns in the third quarter. After
putting six points back on the board, ROCORI needed one more score to
take the lead. Watch all of the highlights to see how the rest of the
game unfolded, and be sure to catch the Spartans in action tonight at
home as they take on Little Falls at 7 p.m.
The ROCORI Spartans headed into last Wednesday night’s game against
the Willmar Cardinals with a good idea of what their playoff road would
look like depending on the outcome of the game. Win, and be nicely
positioned to open the playoffs at home. Lose, and face the daunting
task of trying to navigate through the playoff bracket with all road
games.
The first half of the game looked something like a
pewee football match with each team turning the ball over possession
after possession. Finally, after managing to not turn the ball over on
three downs, ROCORI punted the ball only one yard! Willmar was set up
with great field position before ROCORI quickly returned the favor with
an interception of their own. Despite all of the miscues from both
teams, each defense played well enough to shutout the opposing squad.
The second half opened with two early touchdowns both on plays of
50-plus yards. Spencer Schulte ripped off an electrifying touchdown run
that put the Spartans on top 7-0. Willmar quickly countered with long
touchdown strike tying the score at 7 - 7. Both teams added another
touchdown in regulation before heading into overtime. If you did not
have a chance to make it out to the stadium (which many of you didn’t
because of weather), we won’t spoil the rest. You must see the
highlights of this game by watching both of these remarkable videos.
However, we can say that ROCORI won in dramatic fashion! For all of our
viewers that won’t be able to make it to the game at Bemidji, be sure
to stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI for all of your highlights.
