Storm Beat Proctor in First Round of Playoffs

The Sauk Rapids/Rice boys hockey hosted a first round playoff game against Proctor. Tyler Serena had a great first period with numerous scoring chances. He would tally the first goal for the Storm and they would build a two-goal lead. Late in the third period it was a one-goal game but Travis Cariveau tallied and empty net goal to clinch the win for the Storm. In their next contest the Storm would take on Duluth-Denfeld. Sauk Rapids/Rice would lost on a last second goal and their season came to an abrupt end.

Sabres Spoil Senior Night

With the season winding down, and the Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm primed to make a playoff push, the Sartell Sabres came in and stole a win on senior night in front of the home crowd. The cross-town rival Sabres were slow out of the gates, but as the game went on they slowly began to dominate the play on both sides of the puck. Although the Storm lost this match-up, their season has been filled with impressive victories and the city of Sauk Rapids is proud to cheer them on as they try to take home a state title. Storm Dominate Early; Have to Score Late to Win

The Sauk Rapids/Rice boys hockey team hosted the Willmar Cardinals. It was a high scoring first period as the Storm scored three to take an early lead. The Cardinals never gave up and had four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead midway through the third period. The Storm righted the ship and pulled out a 5-4 victory at home against a very good Cardinals team.

Kothenbeutel and Company Can't Keep Season Alive

In the first round of the 2008 girls hockey playoffs the Storm'n Sabres found themselves up against a familiar face. The Storm'n Sabres found themselves in a three goal deficit as the third period came around, but they wouldn't go out without a fight. Kothenbeutel got things going early on in the third period with a gritty goal and another soon followed for the Storm'n Sabres. The comeback wasn't able to come full circle as they would go on to lose. It was a very successful season for coach Gary Clafton and his girls.

On Tuesday February 5, the Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm traveled to the National Hockey Center to take on their arch-rivals, the St Cloud Tech Tigers. Great goal-tending from senior goaltender Jon Fleck allowed the Storm to shake off a sluggish start. The National Hockey Center can be an intimidating arena to play in, but the Storm were up to the task as they won a close match and tightened up the gears for a playoff push. A last minute goal lifts one team and leaves the other reeling

It was an epic battle between two powerhouses in the CLC. Sauk Rapids/Rice hosted St. Cloud Apollo in boys hockey this past week at Sports Arena East. The Storm got a quick goal from Nik Wurdelman after a bit of confusion in front of the net allowed Wurdelman to poke it in. Apollo wouldn't wait long to tie things up and with a scoreless second period it all came down to the final 17 minutes of regulation.

The Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm took on the River Lakes Stars in CLC action. The Storm were coming off of a tough loss to the Alexandria Cardinals earlier in the week. It was a slow start for the Storm boys as they saw the Stars get the first goal. After that it was all Storm hockey at its finest. The final score was 6-1 in favor of the Storm.

On Tuesday January 15th, the Sauk Rapids Storm boy’s hockey team took on the always-difficult Cardinals from Alexandria. The Storm got off to a sluggish start, but strong goal-tending from Beau Jacobson would allow them the chance to get back into the game as both Matt Szymanski and Travis Cariveau scored for the Storm.  As hard as the Storm battled back it would not be enough as they fell to the Cardinals 4-2. Sartell-Sauk Rapids/Rice vs River Lakes Girls Hockey January 15th

The Sartell Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm'n Sabres took on their inter-conference rivals, the River Lakes Stars in Sartell. The first period was all about defense and goaltending. During the intermission both head coaches must have said something about offensive production because the during the second period we saw 6 goals in under five minutes. The Storm'n Sabres had a two goal lead for the majority of the game and picked up a huge CLC win.

It was the biggest game of the season for the Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm as they took on CLC rival the Tech Tigers. Travis Cariveau and Cole Christiansen each tallied three points for the Storm as they dominated play in the third period. Beau Jacobson had another great game between the pipes as he only allowed two goals.

After coming off of a phenomenal win against the Fergus Falls Flyers, the Sauk Rapids Storm boy’s hockey team looked to knock off another state tournament caliber team, The Duluth Denfeld Hunters. The Hunters came into this game ranked in the top ten in the state, and the Storm were well aware of this. In the early going the Storm relied heavily on solid transition play, good forechecking, and sensational goaltending. Watch all the highlights from each off the three periods and see if the Storm were able to pull of another upset.

The Sauk Rapids Storm boys hockey team have been playing fantastic hockey this season. This story features highlights from their game against Fergus Falls. The Flyers have been a State Title contender for the last couple years, but it was the Storm who were out to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with this season. Sauk Rapids/Rice vs Fergus Falls Boys Hockey

First Period

It was a great game between the Otters of Fergus Falls and the Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm. The Storm fell behind early on but Beau Jacobson had a great game between the pipes for Sauk Rapids/Rice. In the first period the Storm would get penalized way too often and it would come back to haunt them.

In the second period it was the Andy Henkemeyer show. He would assist on the first goal and score the second one. Jacobson still remained steady in the crease and the Storm would eventually tie things up.

In the third period Sauk Rapids/Rice would get a great goal from Travis Cariveau. Andy Henkemeyer would get an assist on the goal and give him three points for the game. The game would end in a tie as the Storm tried to kill off a 5 on 3 to close the third period. OT would come and go without any goals.

Sartell-Sauk Rapids/Rice vs River Lakes Girls Hockey

First Period

It was a great game between the Sartell/Sauk Rapids Stormin Sabres and the River Lakes Stars in Richmond. The Stormin Sabres jumped out to a one goal lead after a great rebound goal by Nikki Kothenbutel. The Stars would answer with three goals before Kayla Hendrickson added one to make it 3-2 after one period.

In the second period the Stormin Sabres would strike first to tie things up at 3. The tie, however, wouldn't last long as the Stars came back with a goal just a few minutes before the horn sounds and it would be a 4-3 game at the 2nd intermission.

It all came down to a three minute span at the end of the third period. The Stormin Sabres were down by a goal and had a power play chance. See if the Stormin Sabres can squeak out a win on the road.

This story features an interview with head coach Sheldon Weston as well as footage of their practice.  The team is gearing up to take on the Hermantown Hawks and they’d love to see you all at Sports Arena East.

STORM Boys Hockey vs Pine City

1st Period

In the first period of the section playoff game Sauk Rapids would host the Pine City Dragons. It was a period dominated by quick skating and a ridiculous 16-2 shot advantage for the Storm. The Storm, however, were unable to get one past the Dragon goaltender.

The second period was the same for the Storm with the number of shots, but this time they would slip a few goals past the Dragon goaltender. The crowd would get behind the skaters and the boys took advantage of a number of Dragon penalties.

In the third period the intensity reached a new level. The Storm boys really took it to the Dragons and gave the home crowd a treat. Everyone got into the act and the Storm would eventually win. It was a great season for the Storm but it would end in their very next game. It was a true joy to watch these kids play hockey and be a great team that the Sauk Rapids-Rice community can be proud of.

Sauk Rapids Boy's Hockey vs River Lakes

FIRST PERIOD

It was senior night at Sports Arena East, as the Sauk Rapids Storm boys hockey team took on the River Lakes Stars. The first period was a great defense matchup as both teams boast great goaltending. Storm Goalie Justin Lochner was not tested as often as the Stars goalie but when the puck came at him, the senior was ready for the challenge.

The Storm would draw first blood late in the 2nd period. A nice power play goal would spark the onslaught that would ensue. Lochner was unconsious in net and the hard hits would keep the Stars at bay.

The grand finale on senior night was a treat for those in attendance. The period started with the Storm up one goal. When it was all said and done, the Storm would accumulate 5 more goals in the last period. Lochner would get injured on the Stars' lone goal.

SR/R Storm Boys Hockey vs. Fergus Falls Game Recap

On January 9th the Sauk Rapids/Rice Storm boys hockey team took on a very good Fergus Falls Otter team. Fergus was led by Cody Koski who scored five goals against the Storm and would run away with this one. The Storm boys struggled with a number of key injuries including their captain Brad Phenow. Justin Lochner would also get injured in this one but by the end of the game appeared to be okay. All-in-all it was a very tough game for a surging Storm team.
