The Best Stories Of 2006

VIOLENCE... OUR KIDS... VIDEO GAMES
If you have children or grand children, this is a must see 5 minute video.  A child will witness over 200,000 acts of violence in mass Media before he or she turns 18.  Research indicates that this same media violence has a negative impact on natural brain development.

Stephanie Stracke is a ROCORI Student Councilor and a member of the Project SERV staff, a special task force brought together following the shootings at ROCORI in 2003.  In this story Stephanie, who has her own teenagers at home, talks about how the exposure to screen violence can cause increased aggression, fear and desensitization to real life violence.

Local Collector Reflects On KIRBY PUCKETT

The "Land Of ROCORI" has a great tradition of producing great baseball players.  Our Cold Spring Springers have been to the State Tournament 40 times over the past 81 years and have won it 7 times.

In a town with such a strong baseball tradition, it might not be surprising to find out that we have our own "Kirby Puckett Pl".  This street sign is located on the corner of a home that houses a mini Kirby Puckett museum.

In this story you'll meet Ken who has collected over 2500 unique Kirby Puckett baseball cards.  From mugs to bobble-heads, Ken has most of what has ever been produced representing the baseball career of Hall of Fame Kirby Puckett.

CORNER COPY... Cold Spring Record (11/24/05)

Sometimes we hear conversations where the topic is how our world has changed . . . never would any from our generation have ever thought to take a gun to school, much less use it there. Never did we dare talk back to dad or mom . . . either way we dealt with dad. We would have never entered another person’s home (whether under construction or not) and take things that didn’t belong to us.

Today’s world seems much different. Why? Probably because when we were young and growing up there were morals and values distilled in us by our parents, grandparents, or anyone else who would qualify as being older than us.

We remember sitting together with our family and eating breakfast – every day – whether we had school, or not; whether we were off to church, or not; or if we had plans with friends, or not – we always sat at the table with our family for breakfast. When we were home for summer vacation we ALWAYS sat down at the dinner table for a meal with our family. Nearly everyday, the rest of the year, we sat down at a specific time to eat a meal with our family in the evening; some called this meal dinner, our family called it supper.
