In this story you will have the chance to meet Tracy Skluzacek, a senior at ROCORI High School. Skluzacek recently went on a mission trip to Kenya. She shares how mission trips sometimes are associated with negative thoughts by here peers, but that didn't stop her from having a great time on her trip. Mission trips are a great way to volunteer your time to those that may not have the same opportunities as you. Skluzacek also states, not only can you learn about other cultures on mission trips, but you can also learn so much about yourself. Thank you so much for sharing your story Tracy. Your selflessness and servitude illustrates wisdom beyond your years.

While nobody can predict the future, it is quite possible that the city of Cold Spring missed a fantastic opportunity to bring an important business into town. Obviously there is much more to the story than our two videos, but watch this two-part story from a year ago and judge for yourself. 

One Year Ago

It seems like everybody these days is concerned with Green Energy. By now, many folks already know that Green Energy is just a fancy way of saying environmentally friendly energy. DigElog ROCORI is proud to bring you coverage from a presentation given by David A. Winkelman, a project manager for Winklemans Environmentally Responsible Construction. Mr. Winkleman has over 30 years of experience in construction, conservation based education and marketing, targeted to national audiences of consumers.

During his presentation, Winkleman also proposed that a group of developers build a showcase store for green energy solutions on the edge of Cold Spring on Highway 23 on the old Auto Dealership lot. Included on this lot would be an actual 180-foot wind turbine. This story is sure to generate a lot of buzz around Cold Spring, and there will be another meeting tonight at City Hall at 7:30 p.m. on this topic. Watch this story to learn more.

One Year Ago:

As part of DigElog ROCORI’s extended coverage of the 2nd annual Old Glory Run, we had a chance to catch up with John Swanson, one of the inspirations for the Old Glory Run. Swanson, a 10-year military veteran lost his leg in combat. Humble by nature, he often tries to avoid the spotlight but at the same time understands the importance of sharing his story. Like so many other veterans, he appreciates the efforts of people like Curt and Pam Karls that go the extra mile to help reintegrate returning soldiers back into society.

In this story, Swanson discusses how life has changed for him since the last time we saw him. He also shares how the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) has helped with his medical issues over the past year. For those that are not familiar with the Old Glory Run, all proceeds from the event are donated to the Minnesota Chapter of the D.A.V. This is a must see story, and as the 4th of July approaches it is a great reminder of the sacrifices that others make for our freedom.

This Year

While it will be tough to top last year's event, the Karls as well as the other organizers of the Old Glory Run will do their best to do so. "We are truly excited to offer this event to those who support our troops and especially to all of the men and women in uniform - past and present. The Old Glory Run raised $16,000 in 2009 and $14,000 in 2008, which was donated to our local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization. Our goal for the 3rd annual Old Glory Run is to raise $25,000 to help offset costs for a new van for the DAV. This van is used to provide free transportation for area veterans for medical appointments."

Before the middle school referendum passed, DigElog ROCORI had the chance to interview a member of the middle school task force, Barry Venable. Watching the construction happening around the high school, it is hard to believe that this took place only one year ago!

We continue with DigElog ROCORI’s Middle School Referendum story in an interview with committee co-chair Barry Venable.  First and foremost, Venable illustrated the importance of the task force keeping this proposal as cost-effective as possible. He pointed out that in the past, ROCORI has voted on referendums that exceeded $50 million whereas this one is under $30 million. He also explained the long and careful process that the task force went through so that they could examine and re-examine the best possible way to fix the problem. Be sure to watch the final installment of this program as we illustrate the economic and educational advantages that this referendum proposal creates.

Minnesota 13 "wet wild prohibition days" Author's Tour Of Book PART II

This story features part one of a two-part program with St. Cloud State professor and author of the book Minnesota 13, Elaine Davis. Elaine was gracious enough to allow DigElog ROCORI to record her presentation to the Cold Spring Area Historical Society about her new book in 2007, which chronicles Stearns Countys involvement in producing moonshine during the prohibition era. Stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI for the final installment of this fascinating story.

"Minnesota 13" is a historical overview of the years from 1920-1933, when moonshine production dominated the county while the 18th Amendment was in effect. The skill of the local moonshiners -- combined with the perfect strain of corn -- produced some the best whiskey in the United States. It was bootlegged and sold in speakeasies from New York to San Francisco and competed successfully with the best alcohol rumrunners could provide.

DigElog ROCORI: Three Years Ago

World's Biggest Hug (Cold Spring, MN. USA. Oct 16, 2001)

                

Here is a look back at a story that DigElog ROCORI published three years ago. This story dates all the way back more than eight years ago in the land of ROCORI! At exactly 1:51 pm on October 16th, 2001, a total of 2902 students, teachers, volunteers and community supporters hugged together for a total of 10 seconds on the football field.  It was William J. Virant Field in the community of Cold Spring, Minnesota USA.  This 20 minute story tells about the kids who inspired this idea and a community that was still trying to heal after the tragedy of 911.  Yes, even this small community located in the middle of rural Minnesota, thousands of miles for New York and Washington DC, felt the impact of the 911 attack.  This event broke the worlds record and was submitted to the Guiness Book of World Records.  The video was submitted as a part of the official event documentation.

Today we present a special piano music event that rarely happens in the big city let alone in the Land of ROCORI.  Here is a Christmas Grand Piano Duet performed by Cold Spring Area Maennerchor accompanists Ingrid Loewen and Bette Kuss.   

Hear "Go Tell It On the Mountain", "Angels We Have Heard On High" and  "A Merry Christmas Medley".

This music video comes from a concert performed in Melrose at the High School Auditorium on December 12th, 2005.  Both the Maennerchor and the Melrose High School Choir performed during this special holiday event.

In this story Tony Nathe tells us about some of the things that go on at the bake and craft sale. Scareview Gardens is a haunted house-fundraiser that donates all of their proceeds to local charities. This story features an interview with the founder and coordinator of Scareview Gardens, Chanda Gebhardt. It also features an inside look at some of the spooky sights the haunted house has to offer."
