2011 HOMETOWN PRIDE DAYS Whether you are a resident of Cold Spring area, or a visitor, HOMETOWN PRIDE DAYS celebrates the many great things about our community.  This is the 32st year for the annual event, held the last weekend in July,  and is filled with food, music, great sales, and  fun events for everyone - Kids, families, & seniors.    EVENTS ARE PLANNED THROUGHOUT COLD SPRING, BEGINNING WITH THE CITY-WIDE GARAGE SALES AND SIDEWALK SALES ON THURSDAY AT MANY DOWNTOWN SHOPS.   Many of the popular events you've enjoyed in previous years will again be a part of HomeTown Pride Days: ~Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce Community Breakfast ~ HUMAN TRUCK PULL -- NEW EVENT! ~ 31st Annual Cars by the Creek Car Show ~ Craft Sale ~ Bingo Tent ~ Friends of the Library Book Sale ~ Art Exhibit   ~ Beer Garden & Old Tyme Music ~ Cold Spring Fire & Rescue Department FIREFEST Click here for the current Calendar of Events. HOMETOWN PRIDE MOMENTS FROM THE PAST HUMAN TRUCK PULL  Friday July 29th -- 6:30 PM  Check out this new event, sponsored by Winners Sports Bar and Schweiters Chevrolet.  Teams of 3 persons will pulling a pickup truck down Main street, with the fastest team winning cash prizes and trophies.  There will also be TShirts and gift certificates given away to spectators.   To enter your team in the competition, contact Winners Sports Bar at 320-685-3343.  BELT SANDER RACES Friday, July 29TH -- please note the new start time:  7:30 PM at the Cold Spring American Legion Parking lot.  Free admission for spectators. A new event in 2oo9, the Belt Sander Races were a big hit, and the event coordinators, Tim Kraemer & Lon Negen, are gearing up for another fun night for both competitors and spectators!   Entrants race their belt sander on a custom track for the fastest time in a double-elimination event.   REGISTER EARLY -- Entry limited to the first 24 participants. FREE EVENT!  Spectators can cheer on their favorite entrant, plus vote on the best-dressed belt sander.   Be sure to get downtown early to enjoy the variety of food and beverages available at the many booths provided by area non-profit organizations and take in the new HUMAN TRUCK PULL competition, which begins at 6:30 PM on Main Street.  Grab a good spot to watch the Belt Sander Races to see who will be crowned the 2011champion!    Click here for ENTRY FORM & RULES After the races are done, plan to stay awhile and enjoy music by Max & the Boys, playing great classic Rock & Roll music while you enjoy the Beer Gardens and other beverages, as well as more great food at the Cold Spring American Legion's Beer Garden.

NEW EVENTS FOR 2011 We have added several new events this year: DUNK TANK -- Saturday July 30th, 12-2 PM.  Sponsored by Teal's Market, this is a fundraiser for the local food shelf.   Be sure to stop by the Dunk tank to see who is the -- KIDS GAME TENT -- DESTINATION IMAGINATION Fundraiser Friday, July 29TH  1-6 PM, Main Street, Cold Spring Kids ages 3-10 years will be able to enjoy a variety of fun activities and games at the DESTINATION IMAGINATION Game Tent, which will be located in front of the Cold Spring American Legion.  Check back soon for a list of games available.   Please Note: This is a fundraiser for the local DESTINATION IMAGINATION team which is raising fund to pay for their recent trip to compete in a national competition.  There will be a small charge for game tokens.

Dr. Mary Jo Femrite, a graduate of ROCORI High School, received her BA degree from Moorhead State University and her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry.  Dr. Femrite completed a residency with Minnesota Eye Consultants, specializing in eye disease management, LASIK surgery and comprehensive eye care. Following her residency, Dr. Femrite continued in private practice from 2001-2006.  She opened LAKES Eye Clinic in May 2006. 

Dr. Femrite is active in the Minnesota Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association and the Cold Spring Chamber of Commerce.  She has presented several case reports, research studies and lectures to the optometric community and public.  She currently reside in the Cold Spring community with her husband and 2 children.

2nd Annual Belt Sander Races

RULES 

OPEN CLASS

·       This is an “Open” category for sanders with or without alterations.

·       Belt sander must propel itself with a conventional sanding belt only.

·       Modifications and substitutions are allowed to the motor, drive system, electricals, etc.

·       Track Guides and Wheelie Bars are allowed and encouraged (see Track Guide).

·       Decorations are allowed and encouraged.

 

TRACK

·       Two plywood tracks, 1 foot apart.  Sanders will race side-by-side.

·       Inside dimension of track is 7 ¾” wide with 2 ½” high side walls.

·       Racetrack length is approximately 30’ long.  There is a 20’ run-out track after the finish line.

·       Race entries must fit into track and run on track surface.

 

POWER

·       Standard 120 volts A.C.

·       Belt sander must plug into standard 3-prong extension cord provided.

·       Sander must run on supplied power, typically 20 amps.

 

SANDING BELT

·       Race entry must run on unaltered, store bought sanding belt.

·       Any size or grit of sanding belt is acceptable provided it fits in track.

 

RACING

·       Race Official’s decision is final.

·       Race entry owners are responsible for tracking entry belt before each race.

·       Race entry owners are responsible for ensuring sander fits into track.

·       Race entry owners are responsible for any sander decorations.

·       Race entry owners are responsible for all risks or damage to their sander.

·       Once sander is placed on track, it cannot be touched, adjusted, or interfered with.

·       Race Official aligns entries at starting line and plugs into power cord.

·       Race Official is responsible for making sure sander switch is on.

·       Race will be replayed if switch was not on or, in Race Official’s discretion, any other unfair situation occurred.

·       Race Officials collect sanders at end of track and return them to their owners.

·       Sander is disqualified if it stops, jumps track, flips, or does not finish for any reason.

 

PRIZES

There will be a prize for the best-dressed belt sander and 1^st place.

Bob Gerads Performs at Richmond's got Talent

Last weekend as part of the Richmond River Lake Days festivities, the community came together to watch the First Annual Richmond’s Got Talent. Sixteen acts performed for a panel of judges. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three finishers, and all other performers received a free pizza voucher from Jimmy’s Pizza. In this story you’ll see a full-length performance by Bob Gerads. While Gerads has been involved in countless DigElog stories throughout the years, we have never seen his singing and songwriting skills. Although he was not one of the top three finishers, he still gave a fantastic performance! Watch this story as Bob Gerads performs an original piece as well as a country music cover. Hats off to all of the performers that competed in the first ever Richmond’s got Talent. Stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI as we will continue to feature more acts from the show.

ROCORI Student Sings National Anthem at First Ever Beltsander Races

On Friday July 24, 2009 the Cold Spring American Legion hosted the first ever belt sander races in the state of Minnesota. Eighteen participants uniquely decorated their belt sanders as they competed for cash prizes. Before the event took place, our National Anthem was to be played; however due to technical difficulties, the C.D. player would not play. Luckily, a brave ROCORI student named Bailey came forward and gave a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem.

Dr. Mary Jo Femrite, owner of Lakes Eye Clinic, is originally from Cold Spring.  Daughter of Bob and Darlene Dockendorf, she attended Rocori High School graduating in 1992.  During high school she was active in track, cross country and spent time waiting tables at the Red River Inn.  Dr. Femrite is active in the Minnesota Optometric Association and the American Academy of Optometry, presenting several case reports and research studies at national meetings.  She is very excited and honored to have the opportunity to return to Cold Spring to serve the eye care needs of the community.
