After a 18 months of fund raising, this past week the Cold Spring Walk n' Wheel Loop committee celebrated in a live video ground breaking ceremony.  In this story you'll here from a number of committee members about this wonderful community effort.  A part of the trail is expected to be completed before the end of July, 2008.  This is a great "Land Of ROCORI" story.

2008 Heart of MN Fishing Tournament PHOTOS

The 25th Annual Heart of Minnesota Fishing Tournament was held this past weekend on the Sauk River Chain of Lakes that connect Cold Spring to Richmond.  This annual event is a major fund raiser for the Richmond Civic and Commerce organization and their work to promote business in and enhance the well being of the greater Richmond Community.

This year was a record breaking tournament with over 400 buttons sold.  The tournament is a catch and release style where all fish entries must to brought to the weigh station alive and once the fish are weighed they are released back into the lake.

THE OLD GLORY RUN * The Inspiration

The Old Glory Run is a first time event held earlier this month that attracted over 700 racers from across the state running a 5k and 1K race in Cold Spring, Minnesota.   In this story, we meet Curt Karls, one of the race organizers, who tells us about how the race came to be.  We're also introduced to John Swanson, a military veteran who lost his leg in the war and is now running again on his artificial leg with his 8 year old son.  John was one of the key inspirations that brought the race idea to the forefront.  Finally, we also meet the group of men and women who ride motorcycles and carry US flags in support our soldiers and veterans. 

One special part of this story includes the start of the 1K race where 150 kids of all ages take off together from the starting line.  We even get a quick glimpse of the winning boy and girl crossing the finish line.

This is the first in a series of stories capturing the first annual "Old Glory Run" held in Cold Spring, Minnesota.  Over 700 runners participated in the 5K and 1K races.  This story teaser of the event captures ROCORI graduate Mike Schneider who sings the Star Spangled Banner and also the start of the 5K race.  Stay tuned later this next week for more feature stories about the event.

Old Glory Run *** Saturday, May 17, 2008

In this story you’ll hear from Curt Karls about an event that is taking place Saturday May 17, 2008 in Cold Spring that will pay tribute to those involved in the Armed Services. The festivities start early in the morning at Springer Park and will continue on past the race.

It's our chance to thank those who have and are serving America and providing freedom around the world. Our goal is to line the race route with "flag-waving" Americans cheering on the runners...especially the soldiers and veterans who are running.

Come early to participate in the opening ceremonies, followed by a 5K Run/Walk and 1K Kids Fun Run. Make sure to join us at the finish line as well to enjoy music and lunch. This will be a fun-filled day with activities for the entire family. Proceeds from this patriotic event will benefit our Disabled American Veterans. Donations will also be accepted on the day of the race.

CEREMONIES                   

The awards ceremony will take place after the 1K Kids Fun Run at approximately 11:30 am. There will be activities for the kids and refreshments for everyone.

         

9:45 am - Opening Ceremonies

• welcoming all runners, spectators and volunteers.

• National Anthem
• Move 5K participants to the starting line.   

         

10:00 am - 5K Race Start

The Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce held its monthly noon luncheon this past week at City Hall in Cold Spring.  Guest speaker for the meeting was Lynn Schurman, chairperson of this year's Hometown Pride Days Festival.  In this story you'll hear about all the plans that are being made for July 25th and July 26th, 2008.  Will there be another "Big Star" music event as a part of the two day festival again this year.  Watch this story and you'll get the inside scoop.

Scareview Gardens is a haunted house-fundraiser that donates all of their proceeds to local charities. Gluek Brewing Company proudly celebrated 150 years of service by hosting a country music concert that was held in honor of all of our service members in the United States military. Jamie O’Neal, Darryl Worley and Lonestar played for the large crowd that gathered on the north side of the Gluek Distribution Center. This story features footage from Darryl Worley’s soldier ceremony as well as an interview with a newly returned veteran of the Iraq War.

2007 Dollars for Scholars Holiday Home Tour

Every year in the ROCORI School District the Dollars for Scholars sets up their Holiday Home Tour. This year the Toren family allowed the Dollars for Scholars crew to take over their house in Cold Spring. Local businesses helped supply the house with festive decorations and everyone in attendance had to pay a cover charge to get the holiday tour. Every year the Dollars for Scholars program helps its ROCORI students by giving away a handful of scholarships.

Last week was fire prevention week and the Cold Spring Fire department was out in the community educating kids and parents about the importance of  “exit plans” and also other fire safety precautions. Members from the all-volunteer department drove out into Cold Spring in the fire trucks while handing out candy, pencils, and other goodies. This story features footage from the evening’s activities as well as an interview with Cold Spring Fire Chief, Jim Maile. It was a great night for entertainment and what a way to end it. The 2007 Homecoming Royalty was announced and everyone had their favorites. But when it was all said and done a new king and a new queen were crowned. Last year's king and queen, Adam Kiess and Quinn Griffin, crowned the winners for 2007.

It is Homecoming week in the ROCORI school district and with that the Seniors took over on Monday night with a hilarious variety show. The MCs on the night were Nick Loxtercamp and Kyle Ratke. They stole the show and introduced all of the great acts. In the first part we have a couple musical guests, an I Love Lucy skit, the Senior girls dance, and the RHS Drumline. Halo 3 Release Party

On Tuesday September 25, 2007 the landscape of the video game industry was forever changed with the release of the third installment of the epic series, Halo. All over the globe, gamers flocked to local media merchants to purchase their copy of the game. The Halo 3 release did so well that it broke the record for sales by an entertainment product over a twenty-four hour period. This story features footage from a Halo 3 release party that was held at the Parkwood Theater in St Cloud, MN.

2007 Hometown Pride Days- Red River Run

Runners of all ages gathered to take part in the early morning runs, and the weather this year was absolutely gorgeous, quite the opposite of last years rainstorm.
