A community theater in Cold Spring, Minnesota was formed in September of 1991 when interested people came together to dedicate the Rocori High School Auditorium to long time arts supporter and Cold Spring resident Glanville Smith. The variety show performance sold out all 500 seats and the proceeds were given to the new board of directors to form a community theatre.  Work began on our first production and the Great Northern Theatre Company was officially incorporated in 1992. Since then, Great Northern Theatre Company has proudly produced many quality plays. This year they put on the comedy musical Crazy For You. This story features footage from play practice as well as an interview with the director and cast members.

Charley's Aunt presented by GNTC

Click To Play                     *QUICKTIME             *Phone

THE PLOT:

Charley Wyckham (played by Alex Schmitz) and Jack Chesney (Ethan Wittrock) are undergraduates in the late 1800’s at Oxford University.  They need a chaperone so they can entertain their girlfriends Amy Spettigue (Melanie Thelen) and Kitty Verdun (Alexis Keppers). Charley receives word that his Aunt, whom he has never met or spoken to in his life, is coming to visit him. The boys grab this opportunity and send a telegram to Amy & Kitty saying that they are invited for lunch to meet Charley's Aunt, Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez, who is a rich and widowed aunt from Brazil ("where the nuts come from").  Their butler, Brassert (Bob Thelen), has everything set up and all is ready until Charley's Aunt sends a telegram to say that she has been detained on business and not to expect her for a few days. The boys start to panic and persuade their friend, Lord Fancourt Babberly - "Babbs" (Grant Thelen), to masquerade as Charley's Aunt.

As Charley and Jack intend to declare their love to their sweethearts at some convenient point during the lunch appointment, they want Charley's Aunt out of the way, so they invite Jack's unsuspecting father, Frank Chesney (Gary Brinkman), to lunch, but those two do not pair up as planned.   Of course, the real Charley's Aunt, Donna Lucia (Mary Middendorf) arrives unexpectedly with her adopted 'niece' Miss Ela Delahay (Kateri Salk).  They play along with the game and reveal some of their own history and past romances.  When Stephen Spettigue (Amy’s uncle & Kitty’s guardian played by Ron Woods) arrives, he is introduced to the fake Charley’s Aunt and instantly falls in love.  The truth is eventually told, everyone saves face, and all works out properly in the end.

As a kid, I can remember my Mom telling me about the wonderful holiday displays that she would go to see at Daytons- downtown Minneapolis with her mother.  Now I'm not sure exactly what year that might have been but most likely it takes us back to the 1940's.  I remember visiting Dayton's in the 1960's a couple of times, although it really wasn't the kind of thing I got into as a kid.

Our story today takes us to the modern day Macy's (previously Daytons) and a visit to their 2006 Holiday Extravaganza titled  Up... UP... & Away featuring the story of Mary Poppins.

Romeo & Juliet @ ROCORI HS

Romeojulietphoto <<< Click for QT mov (BEST)
FLASH Version

Romeo and Juliet
was written by Shakespeare at a relatively early juncture in his literary career, most probably in 1594 or 1595.  Recently his works were performed in the "Land Of ROCORI" by our own high school theatre.

In this story we hear from Romeo played by Scott Rieffer, Juliet played by Courtney Kroska, Father Capulet played by Dan O'Connor and the nurse played by Katie Johnson.  Each describes their acting careers at ROCORI and provides insight into the challenge of doing Shakespeare.

The Director Tom Siekkinen knew that this would be the time for considering Romeo & Juliet earlier this year after successfully presenting "Once Upon A Mattress".  He felt that there was the right mix of talents with this group of students that could meet the challenge of presenting Shakespeare.

Meshuggah-Nuns

Nunsense_photo QUICKTIME (Best Quality)
FLASH (For PC Users)

The Great Northern Theatre Company has begun rehearsals for its 5th dinner theatre production of Meshuggah-Nuns! The Ecumenical Nunsense at the Great Blue Heron in Cold Spring.

<<<  Pictured here is Mary Middendorf of Cold Spring who plays Sister Mary Hubert, the second in command to the Rev. Mother played by Karla Reichel of Cold Spring.  Aimee Minnerath of Paynesville plays Sister Mary Paul (Sister Amnesia) with her puppet Sister Mary Annette (say it out loud a couple of times).  Gary Brinkman of Richmond plays “Tevye” as Howard List and Jean Beckel of Cold Spring reprises her comic role as Sister Robert Anne.  With Craig Kimmerle on piano, Jeanie Schoephoerster on violin, Zach Schwandt playing percussion, and Val Hollermann providing the stage direction, performances will sell-out quickly.

ValThe fifth of the Nunsense shows finds the sisters aboard the Faiths of All Nations cruise where they’ve experienced seas so rough that the cast of the onboard entertainment - Fiddler on the Roof - has all become seasick.  All except the Jewish actor playing Tevye, that is.  So the captain of the ship asks the nuns and Tevye to put on a show.

KarlaMeshuggana is really a Yiddish word meaning “crazy”, and that’s what’s in store for the audience.  With the nuns returning from their sold-out performances of Nunsense II in 2004, it’s an event not to be missed.

3nunsTickets are still available and selling fast for Fridays, February 24th and March 3rd and Sundays, February 26th and March 5th .  Tickets are $35 each and include your choice of a delicious Great Blue Heron dinner and dessert at intermission.

Tickets may be ordered by leaving your ordering information at (320) 241-4682, or by visiting our website at Great Northern Theatre Website  and printing out an order form and mailing it to us.  Check out the website for up to date remaining seats information.

It was toward the end of 2003 when Cold Spring was notified that they had been selected by the Initiative Foundation and the Minnesota Design Team to be involved with their respective community development programs.

In 2004 the 20/20 Steering Committee helped orchestrate a myriad of research efforts, meetings and interviews to help prepare for the Minnesota Design Team weekend.  In June of 2004, over 120 local citizens took part in a MN Design Team community brainstorm session.

Six 20/20 Action Teams were created in September of 2004.  These groups took the priorities established during the previous 8 months and converted them into goals and action plans.

This story tells about the accomplishments of 2005 and the aspirations of 2006.  Planning and taking action for the future can truly make a difference in a community.  This is an insightful story about grass roots people who really want to make a difference in their home town and are succeeding at doing just that.

The Day All Hell Broke Loose!

Allhellblphoto QUICKTIME

The fall of 1940 was a warm one. In some ways similar to the fall of 2005.   With gardens still yielding vegetables well into October, winter seemed far away.

By midday November 11th, some areas of southeast Minnesota topped 60 degrees, but a huge storm was just to the west.  Here in the Land of Rocori, the day was one where kids going to school wore little if any jackets.

There was no "Doppler Weather Radar" back then.  Lots of folks didn't even have radios at home.  No one knew what was coming and how fast it would engulf everything in its path.

Herb Theis, Cold Spring local historian, tells his version of what took place that day... "The day when all hell broke loose!"

"Three storms collided and in a very short time they dumped a whole lot of snow." said Herb.  "Hunters up north got snowed in so bad they never made it back."

Listen to Herb tell about the two trains that collided in Watkins and how one of the train's whistle continued to blow on into the night until the fire in its steam engine belly finally died out in the blowing ice and snow.

It's the time of year when leaves need to be raked, bagged and hauled away.  Aaron and his lovely daughter decide to make cleaning up the back yard a combination of work, play and family fun.  This is a delightful piece that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Wizards & Swords (ROCORI Student Media)

Wizardsswardsphoto_1 QUICKTIME

ROCORI High School has a wonderful multimedia program for students that DigElogROCORI is honored to be able to work with.  These creative kids are working with a fantastic media instructor Linda Leibl, with the consultative assistance of our own Channel 10 Cable Queen Pat Grelson.

Each week, our goal is to be able to have one of the student media teams create a 5 minute video story just for DigElog ROCORI and of course the Channel 10 viewing audience.  This week we have a very action filled video with some special effects that I know you'll enjoy.

"Boys On Broadway" ST. JOHN'S BOYS CHOIR

BoybroadwayphotoQUICKTIME

Central Minnesota has a shining jewel that many of us go about our daily lives without realizing or paying any attention to.  There is a group of 60 boys from ages 8-15 who gather multiple times every week at St. John's University for singing and choral practice.

This internationally recognized group is called the St. John's Boys Choir and it offers young boys a music education and experience second to none in the area.

Each year the St. John's Boys Choir does a fall show for the general public as a fund raiser.  This story is a promotional piece for the choir introducing their upcoming "Boys On Broadway" performances at the Paramount Theater in St. Cloud next week.  This 5 minute video is both entertaining and provides an excellent example of the talent these young performers have.
