In this story we learn about how the ROCORI school district's library and media departments are handling the past few years of continuous budget cuts.  In a world now dominated by computer technology and internet access, how does a school district strapped for money keep pace with the constant advances in technology. The solution... buy old, used computers or hope for gift donations from businesses who are upgrading and parent-teacher group fund raisers.  This story includes interviews with two ROCORI media specialists, one high school student and an elementary principal.

The ROCORI School District Referendum was the topic at the Cold Spring Area Chamber noon luncheon meeting held at the Legion Club on Thursday, October 11th.  In this story, school board member Dennis Gregory provides a very simple and concise explanation of why the additional $800,000 per year operating capital is needed in the district and how it will be used to catch up on many of the cuts made over the past 5 years.  (Given inflation, there has been a 10% reduction over the past 5 years)

Rocori_graph1_2
Here is a clear example of why the Rocori School District is asking us to vote on an operating referendum.  Since 2003, the budget increases have not kept up with inflation.  This has put tremendous stress on the district and their ability to provide a quality education to the young people in the school district.  Without a capital infusion into the budget, our district will continue its recent downward trend in available funds, which will negatively impact the quality of education the students in our community receive and the impact that has on all of us.  Submitted by the "Vote Yes ROCORI" Committee

Here is another example of why the ROCORI School District is asking you to vote on an operating referendum.  Since 2003, while the overall budget increases have not kept up with inflation, the increased cost of utilities and workers' compensation have further eroded the money available to educate our children.  The final result is a budget that has declined by $1.5 million dollars since 2003 (net of inflation). This has put tremendous stress on the district and our ability to provide a quality education for our young people.  The quality of education is the corner post of the quality of life in our community. Please vote "YES" on November 6th.  Submitted by the "Vote Yes ROCORI" Committee

Jack Kathman is one of many passionate volunteers who are helping ROCORI children succeed in their educational life's journey.  In this story Jack, who the students more fondly refer to as "Grandpa Jack", talks about how his three years of volunteering with 1st and 2nd graders at Cold Spring Elementary have opened his eyes to the real budget challenges in our school district.  Another example of Grandpa Jack's commitment to helping ROCORI kids took place this past week when he joined with a local cabinet maker to build and install a portable divider that creates a quiet corner for volunteers to more effectively work with the children.

It is often said that hockey players are the toughest athletes in all of sports, but don’t tell that to the ROCORI cross-country team. Last week the boys and girls battled the elements in what was supposed to be their only home meet of the year. However, the meet was canceled to do tornadoes and large thunderstorms in the area. Even though the meet was canceled the team practiced, and this story features footage of the ROCORI cross-country team running on their home track at the golf course.

Last week the XPrize Foundation and Google announced a new world-wide challenge to encourage man's return to Moon exploration or what is now referred to as Moon 2.0.  Private companies from around the world will compete to land a privately funded robotic rover on the Moon that is capable of roaming the lunar surface for at least 500 meters and sending video, images and data back to the Earth.  The first two successful companies to achieve this challenge will receive an Xprize of 30 million dollars.

Learn More About Moon 2.0

In this story we use the Lunar XPrize challenge as the back-drop to discussing some of the local challenges the ROCORI school district is faced with in our Science program.  Ironically, in one view we see the opportunity for our children to aspire to being a part of a team that will be the next explorers on the Moon and then in another view we take a visit to the ROCORI Middle School where a teacher is hauling 5 gallon buckets of water around in order for the students to perform their science experiments.  I think you'll agree... something isn't quite right here...?

It wouldn't be enough however as the Tigers would sweep the Spartans and give ROCORI their first loss of the season.

A group of over 30 local citizens have recently organized to support a ROCORI School District Operating Referendum that will be voted on this November 6th, 2007.  The District is requesting an increase of $344 per student which amounts to a total request of an additional $800,000 per year for the next six years.
The operating levy is needed to begin to offset the cuts that have been made over the past 8 years in the district.  These cuts have had an impact on the quality of education ROCORI children are receiving.

Tax_increase_graph

In this story, a number of committee volunteers talk about why they feel this referendum is important to the future success of our kids.  They share their sincere and passionate interest in helping to get this referendum approved come November.
