Justin Stommes is the tenth ROCORI boys basketball player to be chosen to attend the State Basketball All-Star game.  He started off by winning the dunk contest and then continued to wow the crowd with his play during the All-Star game. He had a couple more dunks during the game and finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Its been a real treat to watch Justin for 3 years and we wish him the best next year at Eastern Kentucky.  This story features an interview with Justin and Coach Matt Hibbison.

At the State Tournament last week, Justin Stommes and Aaron Burtzel were both chosen as a part of the All Tournament Team.

It's the final game of the season for the ROCORI Boys Basketball team against the Spring Lake Park Panthers.  The winner of this game takes home the State Tournament 3rd Place Trophy.  In the first half ROCORI was led by their group of standout seniors. It was a game where the fans would watch their 6 seniors put on the ROCORI stripes for the last time. It was a great way to say goodbye to one of the best teams ever in the "Land of ROCORI".

In the second half of the third place game, the Spartans would build a huge lead and take out their seniors one last time. It was a fun game and a sad game as well. It was tough to watch this group of seniors for the last time but they put on a show and made us remember how great and special this year was.

1st Half Highlights

Click To Play                 *QUICKTIME                 *Phone

It's the second round of the 2007 State Boys Basketball Tournament.  This game pits the #1 rated St. Thomas Academy against the #2 ROCORI Spartans.  It was a back and forth first half battle. Every time ROCORI has played St. Thomas Academy we have been witness to a great game. This game was no different as both teams would build leads, fell behind and stormed back. In the first half ROCORI would lead the first 17 minutes and then loose it in the final minute back to St. Thomas. Justin Stommes and Derek Eisenschenk each had a good half to lead the Spartan boys.

The second half was, for a time, one to remember. Everything was going great for ROCORI. They were making their shots, playing great defense, and built a big lead. The last 6 minutes, however, was one to forget. Aaseth would foul out and ROCORI fell into a dry spell on offense. The Cadets would go on and beat ROCORI at the buzzer but the boys deserved to hold their heads up as they played a great game.

The History of Michael Jordan

PART ONE

Click To Play                 *QUICKTIME                 *Phone

In the "Land Of ROCORI" if you have been a middle school student or parent in recent years, you'll know only too well about the National History Day project the kids do each year.  7th graders are given the task of doing a major research project about an important individual or event in the history of our country.

At our home, our son Samuel was involved with the process this year and this past weekend he competed at the Regional History Day Project competition.  I must admit, the entire process reminded me of the first big research paper I did in Freshman English at the University of Mn a few light years ago.  Come to think of it, I don't know that I have done anything close to that ever since.

PART TWO

Click To Play                 *QUICKTIME                 *Phone

After weeks of research in books, magazines, and online, and the writing of a series of process and progress reports, in the end each student in the entire 7th grade at ROCORI Middle School puts together their project as a written, visual and spoken presentation.  This entire process has become a well recognized milestone for ROCORI parents based on the trials and tribulations it can create as parents encourage, entice and sometimes arm twist their children to get through all the steps of this monumental project.

Samuel's project was about the legendary college and professional basketball player Michael Jordan.  If you're like me, you'll be pleasantly surprised and will enjoy reliving the magical years of Jordan's career.   Like all stories of life, there are the highs and the lows.  I think you'll agree, Samuel does a wonderful job of pulling it all together in this historical presentation.  Needless to say, my wife Bette and I are very proud of the work he did here...  but more importantly, he tells a story that leaves of legacy for all of us to remember.

THE THRILL OF VICTORY!

Team_cheerleaders_best

Rocori emerged as victor in the Class AAA third-place game, in its third consecutive appearance in the State Boys Basketball tournament. The no. 2-ranked Spartans played their game by defeating the Panthers of Spring Lake Park 61-44. After establishing a early lead six minutes into the first half, they poored on the coals and remained ahead the entire game.  This included a 12-point run during the final 5 minutes of the game.

Trophy_in_air

The Spartans shot 63.6% at the free throw line and did not give up any free throw opportunities to the Panthers. Justin Stommes, who will be headed to Eastern Kentucky to play college ball this fall, led the charge with his 15 points, while teammate Aaron Burtzel added 12 points with a team-high eight rebounds.

Seniors_brink_best

This was Coach Bob Brink's 850th win, maintaining his position as the second winningest Boys Basketball coach in the State.

It would be the third consecutive year the teams would face off to see who would advance to the state tournament. Justin Udermann scored the first 5 for the Spartans but it was a very slow paced, sluggish first half.

ROCORI Headed To STATE TOURNAMENT

It was ROCORI'S game to loose.  They were in front most of the game by as much as a dozen points.  But when the clock dropped below the one minute mark in the game... there was just two (2) points separating ROCORI from Willmar and ROCORI was in the lead.
Check back for more details later this weekend.

ROCORI wins it and will play their first game in the State Tournament at 10:00 AM next Wednesday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.  They will play the 4AAA champion Saint Michael-Albertville H.S. .

In the second half ROCORI would do what they have done so often this year. They refused to allow Park Rapids to make any sort of run to get themselves back into the game. Toward the end of the game we have a rare opportunity to listen in on the team and coaches enjoying their victory. It was a great win for the entire ROCORI team and coaches.  They will play in their third consecutive Section 8AAA final this coming Friday evening, March 16th, at 7:00 in Alexandria. Their opponent is arch rival Willmar. The winner of this game advances to the State Tournament.

It was a slow moving half but Stommes raised the roof of the ROCORI gym with a thunderous dunk.
